In this article, Borasi has outlined some of the attitudes she sees as problematic in mainstream, conventional math teaching in the US. Things have changed since she wrote this in the 1990s, but these attitudes can still be heard in public discussions of mathematics education, and we have all been brought up with some of these attitudes. Please read these carefully (realizing that these are not Borasi's ideas, but ideas she objects to!), and think about where you stand in relation to these ideas. Are there circumstances where they might be true and useful?
