Sources for two good lesson ideas on mathematics and Coast Salish Indigenous weaving



First of all, every math teacher needs this great resource from FNESC (First Nations Education Steering Committee)! It includes lots of great ideas for secondary and elementary math lessons connecting with Indigenous cultures and ways of teaching and learning. On p. 65, there's a lesson on Coast Salish wool weaving.


Here's another great resource on weaving from a group of amazing math educators from Burnaby School District.

And another very rich source: the annual UBC/ EDCP Indigenous Math Day archives! My colleague Cynthia Nicol has organized these wonderful symposia for many years -- watch for the upcoming one next May or so!

Entrance slip for our October 3 class: Science, math, language, Indigeneity

Here is a chapter on scientific language and the language of animacy, from Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer's brilliant book, Braiding Sweetgrass . (I highly recommend this book as a meditation on the interrelationships between scientific knowledge and Indigenous ways of knowing and being).

Kimmerer is a professor of Environmental and Forest Biology at the State University of New York, and is of  European and Anishinaabe Indigenous heritage. Her work brings together two traditions that she greatly respects and loves: the scientific tradition and the tradition of Indigenous ways of knowing.

She has a new book coming out, The Serviceberry, about gifts and a gift economy, and she’ll be giving a talk at the Chan Centre at UBC!

Some helpful starting points for understanding Indigeneity and Indiginizing the curriculum


In our discussion yesterday, we mentioned some sources for teachers building ideas and plans for Indigenizing the lived curriculum with our students. Here are a few links that might be helpful starting points:

FNESC (the First Nations Education Steering Committee) has great resources for teachers, including math resources.

Dr. Robin Wall Kimmerer (who will be speaking at UBC next week on Sept 26) is a botanist, ecologist and forestry professor who brings her experiences as an Indigenous scholar together with extensive knowledge of mainstream Western scientific knowledge in a process that includes both kinds of knowing. Her books, Braiding Sweetgrass, Gathering Moss, and her forthcoming publication, The Serviceberry: An Economy of Gifts and Abundance, are great starting points for people schooled in mainstream math and sciences. Many of her talks are available as online videos.

Mi'kmaw Elder Albert Marshall's work on two-eyed seeing resonates with Robin Wall Kimmerer's work, showing ways to bring together mainstream and Indigenous worldviews in ways that enhance both -- an inclusive 'both-and' approach, rather than an exclusive 'either-or'.

There are many UBC Indigenous scholars whose work (and courses!) you might want to check out as well: Dr. Peter Cole, Dr. Pat O'Reilly, Dr. Charles Menzies, Dr. Shannon Leddy, Dr. Joaquin Muñoz, and many others. 

It's also important to attend Indigenous Elders and community members' talks and community events open to the public to begin to learn more through holistic experiences. For example, the Chan Centre just hosted a day of performances called Come By The Fire. The Nisga'a nation has Hobiye new years celebrations at the PNE in February/ March each year, and on National Indigenous Peoples' Day (June 21), there are many special public events all over BC. Connecting with Indigenous Friendship Centres and with Indigenous consultants in your practicum school and district are ways to learn through listening, experiencing and asking.

Today we tried a 'sit spot' activity that focussed on colour: matching paint chips (as best we could) with colours in the garden, and thinking about what this process offers us from both our teacher bird and learner bird perspectives.

Madi Lewis joined us and led the group in some hands-on light gardening (weeding, harvesting), and then we gave attention to the skies and the seasons, using our bodies to measure and track the sun's path in the sky throughout the seasons. We also tried out a portable sundial made by students from a math history course a few years ago, and saw the results of four 6-month pinhole cameras that tracked the path of the sun in the Orchard Garden from solstice to solstice.

Happy Mid-Autumn Moon Festival this week and happy Autumnal Equinox to everyone this Sunday! Hope that this awareness of the sky adds enjoyment and interest as we celebrate the sun, moon and earth reaching this interesting balance point at the transition of the seasons.
